The claim line is where a repair request starts. The person who answers may only take a message, or may be able to approve a repair, refuse one, or arrange a shop. Those are different jobs, and the difference matters when a unit fails on a weekend or while you are away from home.
Questions to ask before you buy
Ask who answers the claim line, and whether that person can approve a repair without a supervisor. Ask how a decision is reached and how long it usually takes. Ask whether repairs must be authorized before work starts, and what happens if a shop begins work before approval. Ask who may refuse a claim, and how a refusal is explained to you.
Get the answer in writing
A verbal answer on the phone is not the contract. Ask the provider to send the claim steps, the name of the office that approves repairs, and the contact for a dispute. Keep these with the paper you signed.
Check the name against the roster
Find the company name on the paper and check it against the state roster, if the state publishes one. The state pages on this site show the regulator, the statute or program cited, whether a roster is published, and the as-of date of the roster. Where this edition has not read a state, the page says so. A name on the roster shows registration. It is not a quality rating, and it does not tell you how claims will be handled.
The Florida page on this site, at Florida service contract rules and roster, shows the layout used for every state. Check the page for the state where you are buying, and confirm which state's rules apply to your contract.
