A service contract is only useful where the covered item can be serviced. Before you sign, check the service area, the provider network, and the response windows. This article lists what to check and what to ask. It is a general explainer, not legal advice.
Find the service area clause
Look for a clause that defines where service can be performed. It may refer to a region, a list of towns, a distance from the home, or a network of shops. Read the exact words. A broadly named region may still leave out a town or a type of building, and the contract may define the territory in a part of the document other than the service section.
Find out who does the work
Some contracts send the claim to a network of authorized shops. Others let the owner choose a licensed shop and seek repayment afterward. Ask whether the provider keeps a list of network shops, where that list is published, and how often it changes. Ask for the list as it stands on the day you ask. Do not rely on a verbal statement that a particular shop is in the network.
Check the hours and the response windows
The contract may state when a provider must respond or when work must start, in business days or in hours. Check whether those windows exclude weekends or holidays, and whether you must wait for a window to open before you call. Put the windows on the list of questions you send before you sign.
Check the territory if you may move
If you may move or leave the home, check whether the service area follows the item or the address on file. Some contracts tie service to the address, and a move can change the area that applied when you bought. Read the transfer and address terms beside the service area clause.
What a state page on this site adds
Each state page on this site names the regulator, cites the statute or program, says whether a roster is published, and restates the rules in plain words. A state page does not read a provider's network or its territory. The Arizona page shows the layout the site uses for each state. Where a state is marked as not read in this edition, this site has not read its rules and says so.
Questions to send before you sign
Ask the seller for written answers. Where is the service area defined, and does it follow the item or the address? Who is in the network, and where is the list kept? What are the response windows, and do they exclude weekends? What happens to service if I move? Keep the answers with the signed contract.
