A state roster of contract providers is useful only while it is current and complete. Before you rely on a name appearing on it, or missing from it, check the as-of date and the way the list was printed. A roster is a list. It is not a quality rating, an endorsement, or a finding about how any company pays claims.
Know what the roster shows
A roster names the entities a state has listed under its own program or statute. Being listed means only that the name appeared on that list on that as-of date. It does not tell you what a contract covers, what it costs, or how claims are handled. Read the list as a record, not a judgment.
Watch for a stale list
Look for the as-of date printed on the roster itself. If you cannot find one, treat the list as unverified. If the date is older than the seller's paperwork or the contract you are comparing, the list may leave out a name the seller relies on, or still show one that has since left. Note the date and check the list again before any decision.
Watch for a partial list
A roster that looks short, or that has no entries for a category you expected, may be incomplete. Ask whether the state prints the full roster or only part of it. Check whether the state page says a roster exists at all. If the state page says not read, this site cannot tell you the list is complete.
Watch for links that do not work
If the state's link to the roster opens an error, a file for another year, or a page with no list, record the failure and the time you tried. A broken path is not proof the roster is gone, but it is a reason to ask the regulator for the current copy directly.
What to do with a name
When a seller names a provider, ask for the contract's exact legal name and check that exact name on the roster, not a similar one. Save a copy of the roster page showing its as-of date. Ask the seller to show the statute the roster cites. For the rules behind a listing, the Alabama page at https://statecoverageindex.com/alabama.html shows how each state page names the regulator, cites the statute, and says not read where it has not read.
