Comparing a self repair with a hired one starts with a list that has the same lines on both sides. Most people count the parts and skip the rest. The rest is often where the difference sits.
Count the hours you will spend
Estimate the time for the whole job. Include the reading, the shutdown, the removal, the part fitting, the test run, and the cleanup. Add time for a first attempt that may not work. Write the estimate in hours, not as an impression of how long the afternoon will take.
Count the trips
Each run to a supplier, a disposal site, or a second store is a trip. Note the travel time and the fuel for each one. A part that is out of stock adds a day, and a day can add a return trip to the supplier.
Count the disposal and the old part
Ask how the failed part leaves the house and who takes it. Some areas route certain appliances and components through licensed collection. Check the local rules for your area rather than assume they allow ordinary disposal.
Set your hours against the hired quote
Place your list beside the hired quote on the same lines: the work, the parts, the travel, the disposal, the testing, and any return visit. A hired quote that bills labor by the hour has its own way of counting time, so read how it counts hours before you compare totals. Your own time belongs in the self column at a value you choose before you start. Decide that value now, while the comparison is still on paper.
Check the contract before you touch the unit
If the unit is under a service contract, read who may perform the work and whether a self repair ends or limits that cover. This is a term to check in your own paper, not a rule this page states. The state pages on this site name the regulator and say whether a roster is printed. For one state's regulator and roster status, see the Georgia service contract rules and roster page.
What this page does not do
This page does not recommend doing a repair yourself or hiring one, and it does not price either choice. It gives you the lines to count so that the comparison is made on the same terms.
